3 Common HVAC Issues that Lead to Emergency Calls

We know that feeling. Walking into the building, the air is hot, stagnant, humid and you feel a rising sense of instant dread. The last thing you needed was your air conditioning to go out and it’s hard to focus on much else when you can’t keep cool. What went wrong? Here are the three most common air conditioning issues that require emergency maintenance or HVAC repair calls.
Frozen HVAC Evaporator Coils

Have you ever gone to check your A/C unit, only to discover a newly formed glacier staring back at you? It can seem overwhelming and somewhat confusing (after all, you wanted cold, it’s just in the wrong place and the wrong form). The unit freezing over is a fairly common occurrence that we hear at State Energy, but it’s usually not a sign to panic.
This unexpected ice age is usually caused by a dirty air filter, blocked vents or even low refrigerant. When ice builds up on the coils, it can restrict air flow to the rest of the system and into the home, building or unit, reducing cooling and, if left long enough, could potentially damage the system.
Clogged Condensate Drains

Rather than a glacier, this common A/C issue is much more likely to produce swamp-like conditions, Florida Everglades-style. You’ll experience high humidity, standing water and possibly an occasional ogre sighting. A clogged drain line can lead to water damage or cause the HVAC system to fail. Standing water and humidity is also the perfect recipe for mold growth, so it’s best to address this issue quickly and have a maintenance plan to keep drain lines clear and condensation flowing.
Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is (you guessed it!) responsible for cooling the air in your HVAC system. If your system’s refrigerant is leaking, you can expect to have warm, toasty air cycling through your sunbaked Florida home, building or unit. Leaks can occur as a result of wear and tear on the system, corrosion or damage. If your system isn’t cooling properly and you notice a hissing noise near your A/C unit, you may have a refrigerant leak.
Regular maintenance is essential to keeping your HVAC system in tip top shape and can help prevent these common issues. If you do experience any of these problems, be sure to contact a licensed professional for service or repairs.
